The price and the value

Attending the Stanford Math Circle costs nothing, but running it is another story. We’re a little bit like National Public Radio, or the Public Broadcasting Service — we do ambitious things that take a lot of time and sophistication to to pull off, and we depend for our very survival on the generosity of those who feel we offer a service of value. (And, again like NPR and PBS, we do openly ask our supporters for contributions, every once in a while.)

Of course we understand that some people who really need our help just can’t afford to pay for it. We’re always delighted to welcome these people, and eager to do our very best for them, since, like all artists, we know what it is to live in straightened circumstances.

But we hope that everyone who sees in the Circle a unique and valuable resource will keep us in mind, and try hard to think of ways to help us keep going. If you love us, then be sure to tell all your friends. And don’t just invite them to attend — invite them to join you in brainstorming and networking for the continued prosperity of the Stanford Math Circle. Even if you’re not in a position to do much yourself, you never know when you might hit upon someone who could make a tremendous difference.

Most of all, though, what we want and need is enthusiastic participants — kids and parents who love the unique thrill of mathematical beauty and the joys of mathematical investigation. These people alone make everything we do worth while. So if you think you might be one of them, then please do pay us a visit. Just by joining us, you’ll be giving us yet another excellent reason to keep up the struggle.
